Anger and the Body

Emotions live in our body. This includes sadness, joy, grief, fear, love, jealousy, and of course, anger and all of its expressions.

Depending on how present we are in our own body, we have that much ability to be present with the energy of these emotions. When we are present in our body in this way, we don’t struggle with emotions, and they come and go with relative ease. When we live mostly in our head we are numb to our physical being, and emotional energy, including anger, becomes problematic. Anger management is difficult if we are using only our mental faculties. In order to get closer to anger and develop the skills to work with its energy, we need to drop down into our body.

Anger and other emotions are a completely natural part of being human. They are as basic as breathing and sleeping. Skillful anger management is a process of becoming grounded in your body and learning to be at home in your emotional world, learning to experience emotions in this natural and simple way.
