How Fast am I going?

September 23rd, 2009

anger and speedThroughout the day stop and ask yourself, “How fast am I going?” Speed has become the major addiction of our modern world. Human society moves faster and faster, and as individuals, the speedier we get the more anger we tend to experience. Thus, getting familiar with our personal velocity can be very helpful in working with anger management problems.

This is a two week exercise:

Week 1: In the first week, throughout your day stop and listen to the speed in your mind, and then give it a number. So just stop and ask yourself, “How fast am I going?” Feel the speed for a moment and then give it a number from one to ten, one being a calm, relaxed, and balanced speed, and ten being an out of control freight train speed.

Week 2: In the second week, when you stop to observe your speed don’t give it a number but instead just feel the quality in your body/mind. Let go of the labeling it with a number and just feel the speed racing through your being. Then simply drop it and return to your day.

The idea isn’t to try and change your speed or manipulate your experience in any way, but simply to observe. Observation alone is a profound practice so suspend the desire to change things. Notice your speed and allow the power of listening to seep into you.

Just ask “How fast am I going?”, listen for a moment, and then let it go.

This is a really good idea! I never thought of giving speediness a number. I’m going to try this. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Thanks Andrew. I find this exercise really helpful. I’d love to hear how it goes for you.
